Advert
This is our advert, as you can see we have taken on board ideas popular theorists such as Goodwin and Dyer. These theorists say that having a star image is essential in the success of the brand identity. This star image gives everything that the audiences enjoy about the genre a 'face' essentially it gives them something to love rather than just the music itself. This star image image makes the connection between the them and the band more personal.

Theory - Julian McDougall
Julian McDougall stated in 2009 that 'in the online age it is getting harder to conceive a media audience as a stable, identifiable group'.
By this McDougall means that audiences are harder to categorise into different groups such as 'heavy metal' fans and 'hip hop' fans etc. the majority of people now have interests in multiple genres of music. For example a modern male could be a fan of 'hip hop', 'rap', 'rock' and 'pop' all at the same time. Decades ago people who were fans of 'punk' or 'rock 'n' roll' could be easily identifiable by their clothing, hair styles and how they act however now people are not as easily identifiable. Just because someone wears dark clothing and acts like a heavy metal fan it does not mean that they necessarily do not enjoy pop or rap as well as heavy metal.
Basically Julian McDougall is saying that the way people dress and act does not necessarily reflect their taste in music like it did years ago during the age of 'rock 'n' roll', 'punk' and 'disco'. People are not 'stable, identifiable groups' anymore. They are a mix of multiple genres.
Theory - Andrew Goodwin
Andrew Goodwin's theory claims that their are five key aspects to a successful music video.
- Thought beats
- Narrative and performance (repeatability)
- Star image
- Relation of visuals to a song (illustration, amplification, disjuncture)
- Technical aspects (camera, editing, effects, etc.)
Goodwin claims that as long as these five key aspects are in the music video then it will (should be successful). Our video has all of these five key aspects we think. Our music video, although not 100% finished, still possess these five key aspects. Throughout the entire video it has 'thought beats' which some points have more emphasis on it such as the bit where our two characters are walking down the field and the jump cuts are cut to the beat of the song. Our video also links in with Goodwin's theory in the sense that it has a narrative of a simplistic date on a farm which matches the simplistic genre of 'indie rock'. The star image is defiantly apparent in our video, the main male character is also the lead singer in the band which is the star image of the band and especially the lead singer who's popularity will be boosted due to the way that he acts in the music video. It will make the audience think that the lead singer is like the character that he plays although he may not be however this will still boost his and the bands popularity. The song is not necessarily related to the song although it does have some similarities such as the fact that the song is about a girl and obviously there is a female character but the video doses't do everything that the song says because we felt that it would ruin our videos narrative and it would be to cliche. The use of camera and editing has assisted our video a lot in the sense that every shot in the video has some kind of effect on it to give an old and rustic effect or a black and white effect. there are also multiple transitions near the end of the video which further add to the effect of our video.

Peer Assessment Feed Back
On the 17th of November our class held a peer assessment lesson, this involved everyone playing our rough cuts of our music video. When we showed ours to the class they al took down notes and said what was good about the video and what can be improved. Looking through the results it has became apparent to us that we need to edit our video in a number of different ways.
The first way that was suggested to us was that we should change the scene where there is a close up of lead singer as the lip sync is out of sync. This could be improved by shooting some of the band shots again to ensure that we maximise our potential for our final cut.
Another problem that kept cropping up was the fact that our shot composition, this meaning that some of our band shots for example need to be shot from more challenging angles to ensure that our final video looks as believable as possible. We intend for this to happen so extra filming of the band shots are essential.
On the other hand, there were a lot of positives to take away from our first rough cut. One of these positives was that our narrative looked very professional and fit well with the song. Positives also included that our effect on the date scenes looked professional and appropriate.
Taking all of this on board we can take away from this task that some or all of the band shots need to be re filmed to match the quality of the date scenes of the video. This meaning that we don’t want our band shots lacking quality. This means that we intend to re shoot these shots so that they are a better standard and that the lip sync is completely in sync to get the professional outlook that we are hoping for.

Music Video Analysis - The Kooks
The music video Naive by The Kooks is one long story about the main male character presumably breaking up with his girlfriend and basically missing her. He sings about her saying 'it's not your fault, although you could have done more' he's basically not blaming her for the breakup but she could have done more to stop it from happening. I think he's talking about his girlfriend having a good male friend who obviously likes her and she is acting 'naive (hence the song name) and oblivious to it. Which i'm guessing is the reason why they broke up. throughout the video there are scenes of the couple when they were together which is the male character reminiscing about all the good times he shared with the girl messing around and being happy together. The girl is seen being unhappy due to the breakup. at one point in the video the girl is presumably drunk in a night club where she goes to kiss him but he pushes her away this is suggesting that he broke up with her because of her close relationship with another man. Another thing that supports this theory is a lyric in the song which says 'and every time you're on his side' suggesting that she always chose her friend over her boyfriend consequently they broke up because of the other man.
Shot Count - The Wombats
There are approximately 120 shots in the music video. The type and frequency matches the overall style of the video and the style of music that the wombats produce. The music video mainly consists of the camera zooming into the band members whilst they are what seems to be rehearsing so there are lots of close ups of the band members faces to show how much they are getting into the song. However, as the song continues to go on the shots become increasingly more frequent and there is a constant flick from close ups, extreme close ups and wide shots to show the band members. As the song approaches the chorus the shots become a constant cycle of swapping shots, this is too show the overall tempo and volume of the song.
Music Video Analysis - Imagine Dragons
This music video is about the simple fact that no matter who you are or where you come from everyone one has 'demons' inside them. This song/video highlights that everyone has problems and a lot of the time they do end badly. The rang od different people and their story's we find out about not only shows the diversity of the bands audience/fans but it shows that anyone and everyone has 'demons' inside of them due to upsetting and tragic events.
The music video shows the story of 4 people in the crowd of an Imagine Dragons concert: a woman who has just lost a loved one, a victim of parental abuse, a military veteran, and an anorexic man who stares at himself in a mirror. When they begin to perform 'Demons' it flicks to the four characters individually and shows each of their 'demons'. The first person we see is the woman who has lost a loved one, she is obviously devastated and is sat down crying looking on. This could represent that she is looking back at the memories that she once had with this loved one and now they can't have memories like that anymore. The second person who we see is an anorexic man and it zooms into his life and shows him standing in front of his mirror looking at his body in an upsetting way, this clearly shows that the man is unhappy with his body and his anorexia is his 'demon'. The third person we see is a young male that is a victim of child abuse who gets hit of what presumably is his drunk father and then as it goes on for longer a bottle is thrown at the young male, this shows the abuse that is happening to him and this then is his 'demon'. The final person we see is a military veteran who is carrying an injured or dead soldier, the man has tear marks down his face which shows his love for the man he is carrying and the fact that he has to carry him in this state is his 'demon' from being in the military.
All the character's story's shows us that every one is different and we all have to deal with pain 'demons' but the fact that we al have this pain makes us the same in a sense that it is only natural that we feel this pain no matter what it is. All of the story's are things that aren't made up and these things really do happen, it makes us realise as a viewer we should never judge a book by its cover because we will never truly understand how a person is feeling and we will not know that these people struggle with these heart braking issues day in day out and everyone has 'demons' to fight no matter what they are. At the end of the video it shows a clip of real footage between an almost 'real life' version of this song and shows the struggles of real life people, this encourages people to donate to the Tyler Robinson Foundation, which provides financial assistance to families with children fighting cancer.

Music Video Analysis - The Killers
This is the music video for one of The Killers best hits called 'bones'. The whole video has a reoccurring theme and meaning which is that we are all human and we all need someone to have affection from, however In my opinion I think that the singer is just singing about his desire to have sex with the girl in the video. I get this impression from the way the singer mentions words such as "bones" and "skin' and these both have connotations of having sex. The singer also sings about romantic and poetic things such as "water and sand" and "it's only natural" in an attempt to hopefully lure the girl into his plan of selfish desire. The man however is aware that he shouldn't be doing what he's doing as the voice that we hear throughout the song tells him to "wait" and "wait until tomorrow" this could be be a representation of his conscience telling him that this is a bad thing but also plays on the meaning of the song saying "we're only human" so he knows it"s wrong because he isn"t made of stone and knows that his may not be the best things at this time.
