Theory - Julian McDougall

Julian McDougall stated in 2009 that 'in the online age it is getting harder to conceive a media audience as a stable, identifiable group'. By this McDougall means that audiences are harder to categorise into different groups such as 'heavy metal' fans and 'hip hop' fans etc. the majority of people now have interests in multiple genres of music. For example a modern male could be a fan of 'hip hop', 'rap', 'rock' and 'pop' all at the same time. Decades ago people who were fans of 'punk' or 'rock 'n' roll' could be easily identifiable by their clothing, hair styles and how they act however now people are not as easily identifiable. Just because someone wears dark clothing and acts like a heavy metal fan it does not mean that they necessarily do not enjoy pop or rap as well as heavy metal. Basically Julian McDougall is saying that the way people dress and act does not necessarily reflect their taste in music like it did years ago during the age of 'rock 'n' roll', 'punk' and 'disco'. People are not 'stable, identifiable groups' anymore. They are a mix of multiple genres.

Theory - Andrew Goodwin

Andrew Goodwin's theory claims that their are five key aspects to a successful music video. - Thought beats - Narrative and performance (repeatability) - Star image - Relation of visuals to a song (illustration, amplification, disjuncture) - Technical aspects (camera, editing, effects, etc.) Goodwin claims that as long as these five key aspects are in the music video then it will (should be successful). Our video has all of these five key aspects we think. Our music video, although not 100% finished, still possess these five key aspects. Throughout the entire video it has 'thought beats' which some points have more emphasis on it such as the bit where our two characters are walking down the field and the jump cuts are cut to the beat of the song. Our video also links in with Goodwin's theory in the sense that it has a narrative of a simplistic date on a farm which matches the simplistic genre of 'indie rock'. The star image is defiantly apparent in our video, the main male character is also the lead singer in the band which is the star image of the band and especially the lead singer who's popularity will be boosted due to the way that he acts in the music video. It will make the audience think that the lead singer is like the character that he plays although he may not be however this will still boost his and the bands popularity. The song is not necessarily related to the song although it does have some similarities such as the fact that the song is about a girl and obviously there is a female character but the video doses't do everything that the song says because we felt that it would ruin our videos narrative and it would be to cliche. The use of camera and editing has assisted our video a lot in the sense that every shot in the video has some kind of effect on it to give an old and rustic effect or a black and white effect. there are also multiple transitions near the end of the video which further add to the effect of our video.

Progression of Editing

Peer Assessment Feed Back

On the 17th of November our class held a peer assessment lesson, this involved everyone playing our rough cuts of our music video. When we showed ours to the class they al took down notes and said what was good about the video and what can be improved. Looking through the results it has became apparent to us that we need to edit our video in a number of different ways. The first way that was suggested to us was that we should change the scene where there is a close up of lead singer as the lip sync is out of sync. This could be improved by shooting some of the band shots again to ensure that we maximise our potential for our final cut. Another problem that kept cropping up was the fact that our shot composition, this meaning that some of our band shots for example need to be shot from more challenging angles to ensure that our final video looks as believable as possible. We intend for this to happen so extra filming of the band shots are essential. On the other hand, there were a lot of positives to take away from our first rough cut. One of these positives was that our narrative looked very professional and fit well with the song. Positives also included that our effect on the date scenes looked professional and appropriate. Taking all of this on board we can take away from this task that some or all of the band shots need to be re filmed to match the quality of the date scenes of the video. This meaning that we don’t want our band shots lacking quality. This means that we intend to re shoot these shots so that they are a better standard and that the lip sync is completely in sync to get the professional outlook that we are hoping for.
